Lady Gaga said that when she joined forces with Beyoncé for the latter’s “Video Phone” clip, she wanted to “pay tribute” to the Destiny’s Child alumna by stripping down to look more like the “Bootylicious” superstar.
Well, for the pair’s most recent collaboration, B certainly returned the favor (and some!) by entering Gaga’s world for “Telephone.”
Gaga went as far as to suggest that the new video is more about “Honey Bee” than herself and claimed that Beyoncé is her “vehicle” for changing the idea of what a visual product can be.
“The video in a lot of ways is more about [Beyoncé] even than it is about me,” Gaga told L.A.’s Power 106 radio station after the premiere. “It was sort of a pop-art venture for me to bring her into my world. In a way, the video is an attempt for her and I to erase pop music as we know it up until this very point. It’s meant to change the perspective of the world on what a pop music video should be and she’s kind of the vehicle for that. In reality, more people around the world are familiar with her aesthetics than they are with mine. It was something for me to kind of change the way that you see her for one video.”
Certainly, it is different to see Beyoncé in a Bettie Page haircut and various Gaga-esque costumes as she murders her boyfriend in a diner. But she fit in perfectly with the homages to the campy “Batman” series of the 1960s, Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill,” Japanese manga, Salvador Dalí and Madonna that made the “Telephone” video an epic pop-culture adventure.

Lady Gaga has praised Beyonce for her ‘courageous’ decision to appear in the video for new single ‘Telephone’. The pair star together in the controversial promo, which was released on Friday and has now been viewed more than 15 million times online. The clip, which features sex and violence and is over ten minutes long, sees an extensive guest turn from the former Destiny’s Child singer.
Speaking in an interview on US radio, Gaga paid tribute to her fellow pop icon, after revealing that her initial reaction to the proposal was: ‘What’s in your head, girl!?’ ”
‘She was very courageous in this video,’ she told Ryan Seacrest’s KIIS radio programme. Can you imagine me saying to her, ‘OK, now Beyoncé, you have to call me a very bad girl and feed me a honey bun’? ‘She trusted me because she liked my work and because she knew I loved her. It ended up being a masterpiece,’ said Gaga.
‘Telephone’ went up almost 20 places on the UK singles chart this weekend to number 12.
In the wake of reports that surfaced over the weekend claiming that MTV had banned Lady Gaga’s nearly 10-minute-long video for “Telephone,” a spokesperson for the channel clarified the situation on Monday (March 15). “MTV did not ban Lady Gaga and Beyoncé’s ‘Telephone’ video — in fact, we premiered it on Friday, March 12, on-air and online at MTV.com, two days before this story was falsely reported,” said MTV Executive Vice President of Music and Talent Amy Doyle. “Fans can continue to catch the video as we repeat it on-air and online.” The rumor appears to have begun with a segment that aired on CNN on Sunday in which reporters Fredricka Whitfield and Jacqui Jeras discuss the video — which at press time has been viewed more than 14 million times on YouTube since its release late Thursday — and say that MTV had banned the clip. The CNN video has circulated widely on the Internet, but does not currently appear to be on the CNN site.
With a 2-1 rise for “Telephone,” Lady Gaga and the track’s featured artist Beyoncé have tied the record for most No. 1s since the Nielsen BDS-based radio airplay chart launched in 1992. The pair joins Mariah Carey, who tallied six toppers between 1993 and 2005. Lady Gaga and Beyonce pass Avril Lavigne, Pink, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, each with five No. 1s. Beyonce first led Pop Songs with “Crazy in Love” in 2003, while Lady Gaga first appeared on the chart just 16 months ago.
Kriyss Grant, the first dancer Michael Jackson hand-picked to back him up onstage, speaks with Charles Thomson, exactly an year after Michael sold out 50 concerts at London’s O2 arena.
“He [Frank Gatson] called me around a year later. Beyoncé was starting up her tour and he said he couldn’t think of a better person to audition because he wanted something new, something high energy. So I flew to LA and I danced in front of Beyoncé. She loved it. She said I had to be on her tour.” The pair bonded immediately due to their shared work ethic, says Grant. “Beyoncé is a very hard worker and she’s very hard on herself. It’s funny because we both think the same way. We never think what we do is good enough. We always think we could do better. We say ‘OK, it was good enough for that day’ or ‘that was the best I could do at that moment’ but we are never really satisfied. “Beyoncé always enjoys doing what she’s doing. I mean, she doesn’t use the bathroom or nothing when it comes to work. She’s just always on it and she never wants to eat, she doesn’t want to do anything – she just wants to work, work, work.”
It was during Grant’s time with Beyoncé that Michael Jackson announced his comeback concerts. When Frank Gatson got word of the audition, he told Kriyss he had to go. A lifelong Jackson fan, Grant jumped at the chance. But did he feel apprehensive about leaving behind such a big opportunity on the off-chance that he could dance for Jackson? “No, it was Beyoncé who pushed me,” he laughs. “She told me she was gonna slap me if I didn’t go! She was rooting for me and so was Frank. If I didn’t make Michael’s concerts, I would have met up with the others and been one of the captains on the Beyonce tour.”
